Raktamokshana—cleansing for lasting health.
What is Raktamokshana and How Does It Work?
Raktamokshana is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy focused on cleansing and purifying the blood to promote overall health. In Ayurveda, blood (Rakta) is considered one of the vital tissues responsible for nourishing the body and maintaining balance. When toxins or impurities accumulate in the blood, they can lead to various health issues such as skin problems, inflammation, and allergies. Raktamokshana works by gently removing a small amount of this impure blood through controlled techniques, helping to clear toxins, improve blood circulation, reduce inflammation, and support the body’s natural healing process.

Methods, Benefits, and Conditions Treated by Raktamokshana
Raktamokshana is performed using several safe and natural methods, chosen based on the patient’s condition and the practitioner’s advice. Common techniques include Siravedha or bloodletting, where fine needles or blades are used to gently draw out small amounts of impure blood. Another popular method is Jalaukavacharana, or leech therapy, which uses medicinal leeches to safely remove toxins from the bloodstream. Venesection, a controlled blood removal process using special Ayurvedic instruments, is also practiced.
This therapy is effective in treating a wide range of health issues, particularly those related to blood impurities and inflammation. It helps manage skin diseases such as eczema, psoriasis, and acne, as well as allergies, chronic urticaria (hives), and autoimmune disorders. Inflammatory conditions like arthritis and gout, along with chronic fevers and infections, also respond well to Raktamokshana.
